On the occasion of the exhibition “HILDE IN ITALIA”, the comprehensive body of work created by Hilde Lotz-Bauer during the decade 1934-1943 will be presented, highlighting and juxtaposing, for the first time, the two major aspects of her production: commissions for art historians and reportage photography, combining the perspectives of art historian and photographer.

Trained in art history and photography, Hilde Lotz-Bauer became the first – quasi-in-house – photographer at the Hertziana in 1934. She moved to Florence in 1939 and continued to work for the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence and its director Friedrich Kriegbaum until she left Italy in 1943. In addition to the art and architectural photographs on display, there is also a rich collection of photographs of people and places in the Abruzzi, which she took with her Leica. The exhibition brings together around 100 photographs from the Bibliotheca Hertziana (Rome), the Kunsthistorisches Institut (Florence), the Hilde Lotz-Bauer Archive (London), and the Archive of Franz Schlechter (Heidelberg).
